The ibex, the municipality’s heraldic animal, takes center stage at the visitor center. As an impressive inhabitant of the high mountains and a symbolic figure of the region, it tells the eventful story of the relationship between humans and nature.
The successful reintroduction of the Alpine ibex in 1953 made St. Leonhard a significant site in the history of the ibex in the Eastern Alps. Today, the largest population of Alpine ibex in the Eastern Alps lives in the Kaunergrat Nature Park region.
