Haus am Schrofen

Ibex Meets Valley History
The photographer and hunter Josef Schöpf (1886–1915) lived here and documented daily life in the Pitztal Valley at the beginning of the last century. In addition to his photographs, the exhibition at the Haus am Schrofen features other visual records by early Pitztal photographers, supplemented by a section focusing on the history of the disappearance and reintroduction of the ibex in the Pitztal Valley.
The information area also features a small but charming shop offering a selection of regional products and souvenirs.

Exhibition: Pioneers of Photography in the Pitztal Valley
Through the lenses of a diverse group of photographers, visitors are immersed in the history of the valley. The exhibition tells the stories of courageous women who, despite existing bans, devoted themselves passionately to photography and traveled throughout Europe.
At the same time, it also focuses on those who remained in the valley and, through their photographs, offer an authentic glimpse into life in times past. The outside perspective is also featured, offering new insights into the valley and its development.

Exhibition: “Ibex” – From Extinction to Reintroduction
For several centuries, the ibex was considered extinct in the Eastern Alps. It wasn’t until 1953 that the successful reintroduction of this impressive mountain dweller began here.
The exhibition explores the eventful history of the ibex, the causes of its extinction, and its return to its original habitat. Special attention is given to the significant role played by St. Leonhard and the Pitztal Regional Hunting Association in the reintroduction of the ibex to the Eastern Alps.
