Foundations for Sustainable Ibex Management

Interreg Kleinprojekt Strengthens Cross-Border Cooperation in Terra Raetica

The Interreg small-scale project “Sustainable Chamois Management in the Terra Raetica Region” laid an important foundation for the cross-border monitoring and observation of chamois populations. The goal was to systematically collect data on population trends, population structure, and habitat use, and to make this data comparable.

The project focused on assessing the current status of the ibex populations in the Terra Raetica region. To this end, relevant wildlife biology and ecology data were collected and analyzed across state and valley boundaries.

A key focus was on large-scale ibex censuses, which for the first time enabled a unified assessment of populations across administrative and state borders. The findings provide an important foundation for future management measures and the sustainable development of ibex populations.

In addition, preparations were made to establish a uniform and comparable monitoring system. This system is modeled after the Swiss National Park and is intended to enable standardized monitoring of chamois populations throughout Terra Raetica in the long term.

The project thus made an important contribution to cross-border cooperation and the long-term protection of chamois in the Alpine region.
