Genetic Diversity and the Health of the Ibex
Interreg Project Strengthens Cross-Border Research in Terra Raetica
The Interreg project “Genetics and Health Status of the Ibex in Terra Raetica” is further expanding the scientific foundation for the long-term conservation of healthy and genetically diverse ibex populations.

In recent years, the Tyrolean Hunters’ Association has conducted a comprehensive study of the genetic structure of Tyrolean ibex colonies and completed a study on measures to reduce inbreeding and promote genetic diversity. As part of the new project, genetic analyses are now also being carried out on the South Tyrolean side to fill existing gaps in knowledge and obtain a comprehensive, cross-border picture of the ibex populations.
Another focus is on assessing the health status of the capricorns. To this end, samples from animals that have been hunted or found dead are being systematically examined. The findings are intended to help detect diseases at an early stage and better assess the long-term development of the populations.
The project runs from May 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027, and makes an important contribution to the sustainable management and protection of the ibex in Terra Raetica.
